When SPIGEN SGP sent with iPhone 5 cases to The Gadgeteer, they included the Illuzion Leather Case for iPhone 5. This is a book style cover with room inside for a few cards or folded change. It also has a feature that I personally have never seen in this styling case before. Let’s take a look.

The Illuzion case is made of imitation leather. (I don’t smell overwhelming petrochemical smells with these cases.) It has a streaky texture, called wood grain by SPIGEN, which reminds me of the Epi leather used for some Louis Vuitton bags. I really like this texture. I was sent a few Illuzion cases. Here you see the back of the Lemon Indigo case. The case has a closing tab with a non-magnetic snap button. I generally prefer magnetic snaps because they close without needing a lot of pressure (on the glass screen below), but I imagine the magnets could damage the cards you store in the wallet.

The front and back of the case have a cutout area near the top. The back has a camera cutout and the front has a cutout which we will talk about later. You can see the front and back have been engraved with the SPIGEN logos.

Here you see why this case is called Lemon Indigo. The inner lining has a slightly rubbery feel and it is covered with a repeating diamond pattern. The front has two inside pockets that can hold a few IDs or credit cards or even folded change. Unlike some of these wallet style cases, the panel with the pockets is stitched; you can’t slip anything in there for a little extra storage.

There is a matte polycarbonate back cover that holds the iPhone 5. The Illuzion weighs 1.4 ounces and is 5 “long X 3.75” wide X 0.75 “thick. The thickness has been measured at the closure strap. This will definitely add bulk to the stylish iPhone 5. This back cover appears to be the Ultra Thin Air case for iPhone 5 which is reviewed separately.

I was also sent the Illuzion in Mandarine Black. The colors look striking together, but the case looks like something I would mostly wear around Halloween. The case is also available in Mandarin Rosa (hot pink with orange interior) and Golden Mocha (bright yellow with brown interior).

The seam is regular and straight. Color matched threads are used in construction.

Here you can see that the front cutout is centered around the front speaker of the iPhone 5. Book-style cases like this can be difficult to hold to your ear when talking on the phone because the front cover folds down unless you fold it up completely. It also leaves any cards you have in there exposed; I’m still nervous that my cards are going down somehow of these cases. (I lost my purse with everything in it years ago and I’m still paranoid.) You need to open the case to answer the call and then close it before you start talking if you use it that way.

Something to consider if you decide to speak through the closed lid: All that oil and smudge that ends up on your iPhone screen will now collect on the case. Fortunately, the case is made of faux leather, so it will be easier to clean than real leather.

It’s easier to see in the interior photo, above, but the camera opening has a matte black plastic surround. I imagine this outline is used to avoid flash reflections. I had no problem taking photos with the iPhone 5 in this case.

The polycarbonate back cover fits the iPhone 5 just like the Ultra Thin Air case and leaves much of the top exposed. The sleep / wake button is easy to use.

The bottom leaves the headphone jack, Lightning connector, and bottom microphone and speaker grilles open.

The mute slider and volume buttons are only accessible when you open the front cover. They are easy to use in the thin polycarbonate back cover.

Just like with the SPIGEN SGP Ultra Thin Air case, the polycarbonate case only covers the chamfered edge of the metal sides. The glass is left completely unprotected by the rear cover, but this is not a problem in the Illuzion due to the sturdy front cover.

The Illuzion Leather Wallet Case for iPhone 5 combines a minimal wallet with a protective iPhone 5 case. If you like book-style phone cases, you might find that the Illuzion is even easier to use than other brands because it has a front speaker opening that allows you to talk on the phone while the case is closed.
